Reporting Abuse in the Diocese of Honolulu

UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS

Safe environment is a comprehensive program designed to promote the safe environment for all children, youth, adults and vulnerable people, and prevent child sexual abuse. The program was initiated in all dioceses in the United States at the direction of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB):  “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People”

DIOCESE OF HONOLULU

The Office of Safe Environment and Charter Compliance is responsible for implementing and overseeing the full Diocesan response to the USCCB “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” (The Charter). By providing online and in-person educational training programs, presentations and resource materials, we are able to assist church personnel in responding to the mandates of The Charter. In addition, this office organizes the annual audits required by The Charter and, with the offices of Human Resources, and Clergy, oversees background screening of adults who have ongoing, unsupervised contact with minors, and the internal investigation process relating to child abuse allegations involving church personnel.

Ou parish has a lay person who is in charge of the Safe Environment Program. The head of each ministry is responsible to see that Safe Environment Training has been completed. Records of completion are kept at the parish office and an annual audit is conducted and reported to the Diocese of Honolulu Office of Safe Environment and Charter Compliance.
