“Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which seal or ‘confirm’ the baptized in unison with Christ and equip them for active participation in the worship and apostolic life of the Church” (The Glossary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church).

As its name indicates, the Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens the individual and makes them firm in their faith. It brings the person, no matter what their physical age, to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in order to defend and extend the Good News of the Kingdom of God. All Catholics should receive the Sacrament of Confirmation to complete their communion with Christ and be fully initiated into the Church.

The Sacrament of Confirmation in the Diocese of Honolulu has been restored to the proper theological order of the sacraments of initiation. This means that Confirmation is received after Baptism and before First Eucharist (First Holy Communion), as is the original historical sequence of the sacraments for full initiation into the Church.

The proper sequence for the sacraments of initiation is: firstly Baptism, followed by Confirmation, then culminating in the Holy Eucharist, which is the source and summit of our apostolic faith.
