Following the Mass, all are welcome to a reception in the Grace Parish Center. Each parish in the West Hawaii Vicariate will be providing assigned dishes as we celebrate together in fellowship and gratitude.

This historic celebration honors the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries in 1827 and the countless faithful who have helped build and strengthen our Church through generations. May we come together in gratitude, renew our commitment to Christ, and ask for God's continued blessings upon the Church and the people of Hawaiʻi.

St. Michael’s Founded

On the way to Kailua-Kona, Fr. Heurtel reportedly asked if a place had been reserved for them to live. According to The Pioneers of the Faith, Fr. Walsh replied, “No, dear confrere. I’ve never been in Hawai‘i myself. But” he added with a hearty laugh, “don’t you worry; I was born under a lucky star!”

With a sense of optimism, the two priests arrived in Kona and were befriended by an American national named Amala. Admiring their “courage and unselfishness,” he invited them to stay in a spare room at his cottage. The priests accepted and soon visited Governor John Adams Kuakini, who “kindly” received them.

When Kuakini later learned the pioneer Palani (French) priests were staying at Amala’s, he “thought it his duty” to provide them with living quarters. They were provided with the late Queen Ka‘ahumanu’s vacant house, just south of today’s Moku‘aikaua Church. A stone hitching post from in front of the house can be found inside the Kona Plaza Shopping Arcade.

The priests built a little chapel in the “native style, with a large white cross above the entrance” and it was ready for worship by July 5, 1840. It was the first Mass celebrated on the Big Island and Fr. Walsh recorded it in his baptismal records as the establishment of St. Michael the Archangel mission. Kuakini, who had recently built Kailua’s Hulihe‘e Palace and Moku‘aikaua Church, subsequently offered the priests a piece of land to build a church and school—the present property of St. Michael’s Church.

According to Hawaii Island Leaders, Catholicism spread slowly in Kailua “where the Protestant chiefs and their people dutifully regarded the newcomers as Palani (French) and papists.” Twenty catechumens were baptized that first year. The priest reportedly found a friendlier welcome in Kaloko, “where they built up a loyal nucleus of converts.”

Rich and Ellen Janevicius found a true sense of belonging when they joined St. Michael the Archangel Parish after retiring to Kailua-Kona, where they were warmly welcomed and inspired to reconnect with their Catholic faith. They became actively involved in several ministries—including Coffee and Donuts, the Food Bank, Hula Ministry, Charity Walk, Return Ministry, and the parish golf tournament—discovering meaningful ways to share their time and talents. Through their service, they have built lasting friendships, strengthened their faith, and experienced the joy of being part of a caring parish ʻohana. Their story encourages others to embrace stewardship and discover the many opportunities to serve and grow within the St. Michael's community.

On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Catholic Church in Hawaiʻi will formally launch the Bicentennial celebration year with a statewide simultaneous celebration of Holy Mass. The main Oʻahu celebration will be held at 6:00 PM at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu, followed by a Mass and Reception gathering.
